Description
This hands-on math material helps children visually and physically understand the processes of multiplication and division. Using colorful beads and numbered boards, children explore how numbers work together in a concrete way before moving to abstract concepts.
How it Works:
-
Multiplication Board: Children use red beads and a grid board to practice multiplication facts. They place a number (e.g., 3) on the top of the board and then place beads in rows beneath it to represent each repetition (e.g., 3 x 4 means placing 4 rows of 3 beads each). This helps them see multiplication as repeated addition.
-
Division Board: Using green beads and a different board with 81 small holes, children divide a quantity equally among a number of “groups” (represented by small tiles or a divisor placed at the top). For example, 12 ÷ 3 would involve placing 12 beads evenly into 3 columns. This gives a concrete sense of how division breaks numbers into equal parts.
Benefits:
-
Builds a strong foundation in multiplication and division
-
Encourages independent problem-solving
-
Supports tactile and visual learners
-
Helps transition from concrete to abstract thinking
Perfect for children ages 5–10, this material aligns with Montessori’s approach to self-directed, hands-on learning.
